Character of Spirit
Animal Doodems
When English speakers first heard doodem, they pronounced and wrote it as “totem.” So what many people now call a “totem” actually comes from this word doodem and originally referred to a real clan relationship, not just a favorite animal symbol.
This service is a guided shamanic style journey into the unseen, designed to help you discover the totem or power animal that has been walking beside you all along. Together we step into a safe, intentional space where the veil between worlds feels thinner and the language of symbols, sensations, and inner vision becomes clear. Through gentle guidance, breath, imagination, and focused awareness, you are led into an inner landscape where your primary animal ally can reveal itself in a way that feels personal, undeniable, and deeply familiar.
Many people notice that certain animals have always stood out across their life. A creature that appears in dreams again and again, in art, in synchronicities, or during your most transformative times. This service honors that pattern and helps you recognize that you were not imagining it. There is usually one dominant totem who acts as your main support in times of need. It embodies qualities your soul is ready to express such as courage like Bear, vision like Hawk, adaptability like Fox, or resilience like Turtle. During the journey we invite this primary ally to step forward, to show you how it wishes to support you, and to offer you a felt sense of its presence.
At the same time your soul is not limited to a single animal ally for your entire life. Over the course of a lifetime you may have up to fourteen different animal guides who arrive for specific chapters and initiations. Some walk with you only during childhood, some appear during major transitions such as relationships, illness, spiritual awakening, or the call to your life purpose. In this service you learn how to recognize these visiting guides, how they bring messages or medicine for a particular season, and how to respectfully release them when their work with you is complete.
This is not about claiming a trendy spirit animal. It is about listening deeply to the living intelligence that has been mirroring your journey through the animal world. The process includes time to share what you experience, to interpret symbols and encounters, and to identify concrete ways to work with your totem in daily life. That might include simple rituals, affirmations, altar items, or practices that help you embody the qualities of your animal ally when you face fear, confusion, or change.
By the end of your session you leave with a clearer relationship to your dominant power animal, a map of how other animal guides may have already been present in your story, and practical tools to continue the connection on your own. You walk away not only knowing which animal has chosen to stand beside you, but also feeling its presence as an ongoing source of strength, guidance, and companionship on your path of transformation.
A doodem is an Anishinaabe word for your original clan or kin-group, often linked with an animal like Bear, Crane, Loon, or Fish. It carries your family’s responsibilities, stories, and spiritual connections.
Aside from any specific culture or tradition, you can think of every form as a doorway for energy. An animal, a plant, a stone, or even an element like wind or fire can stand in for a certain quality of power. Animals are especially vivid messengers because each one embodies a very clear pattern of behavior and awareness. Wolf carries a different flavor of energy than Dolphin. Eagle moves with a different frequency than Deer. That is why there seems to be an animal perfectly suited to every landscape and situation on Earth. Each one broadcasts a distinct tone in the great field of life.
When you work with spirit allies, you are really working with these tones of energy. Spirit can take on whatever shape you most easily recognize and trust. If you need courage it might appear as Bear or Lion. If you need flexibility it might arrive as Snake or Octopus. The form is less important than the living presence that stands behind it. You can call on that presence in your times of need and it will answer in the way you can understand best. Through image, feeling, or symbolic animal encounters, Spirit mirrors back to you the support, guidance, and strength that have been available within you all along.
